2024 NEWBURGH VOLUNTEER FAIR

We will have a table at the Newburgh Volunteer Fair which will be taking place at Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site, 11am until 2pm. Find out how you can be a volunteer in a local community organization. You'll discover the different ways you can help support the local Newburgh community and its residents. The day focuses on raising awareness about the important work being done by non-profit organizations in the Newburgh community. Explore how you can connect with people to help. Their work would not be possible without the support of dedicated volunteers. In return, involvement in one of these organizations offers a chance to build useful skills, meet new people, and become more active in your community. All are invited to attend the Newburgh Volunteer Fair, visit the tables, ask questions firsthand and see if any of these organizations are a fit for you. Free admission will be offered to the Museum and to Washington's Headquarters' Hasbrouck House on May 11th, courtesy of the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands. When taking a tour you will learn about the important role Newburgh played during the War of Independence. The Newburgh Volunteer Fair is organized by Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site and the Newburgh Free Library. This event is weather permitting. For more information about the 2024 Newburgh Volunteer Fair contact Jennifer or Elyse @ 845-562-1195 or WHQSHS@parks.ny.gov

2024 Olmsted Network Annual Conference

2024 Olmsted Network Annual Conference

In 1851, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux first met at Andrew Downing’s home, Highland Gardens, in Newburgh, NY. Drawn together by a shared aesthetic and democratic vision, the three pursued careers often centered around Hudson River landscapes and architecture. In addition to Downing Park, their final collaboration, Olmsted and Vaux worked on a range of projects across the region, together and individually.

From September 13-15, the Olmsted Network’s annual conference will explore the lives and varied works of these individuals.

On Friday, we’ll kick things off in style at the Olana State Historic Site in Hudson. Designed by Vaux and owner Frederic Church, this hilltop estate has stunning views of the river Church loved to paint. After a tour and lecture, there will be a cocktail reception on the piazza.

Saturday will be spent in and around the city of Newburgh. Distinguished lecturers, Frank Kowsky (SUNY) and Sara Zewde (Harvard), will deliver keynotes on the local park’s history and Olmsted’s role as a social reformer and designer. During a working lunch and community conversation, we will discuss the importance of thriving parks for neighborhood revitalization. The afternoon will be spent in the park itself and with a bus tour of other key sites around town.

The final day of the conference will be spent on Vassar College’s campus, exploring how landscape design can advance physical and mental well-being. In addition to lectures on the college’s history, we will discuss the Hudson River State Hospital, designed by Olmsted and Vaux, and the challenges faced in trying to preserve it. The afternoon will feature a selection of tours, and the day will be capped off with our awards dinner at the Vassar College Alumnae House.

More details coming soon! Have questions? Email us at info@olmsted.org

Green Loop Walk

We will be gathering this coming Sunday October 22 at 10am at the Shelter House in Downing Park and start walking at 10:30am. The loop is 3 miles and our walk in the spring took 90 minutes at a leisurely pace.

A variety of community members joined the first walk this past spring. We learned about each other while discovering the streets of our city that connect its beautiful natural areas. The walk produced an exchange of ideas among our richly diverse community and it was fun! On Sunday we anticipate being joined by members of the Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy, the Quassaick Watershed Alliance and Newburghers who love Newburgh.
